Builders grade lots for drainage and aesthetics, not fence installation. The soil your fence posts sit in has been moved, mixed, and compacted by heavy equipment — but not evenly and not deeply. Six inches below the surface, you might hit native clay. Or you might hit fill dirt that won't hold concrete.
This matters because a fence post set in unstable soil shifts. Not immediately — it takes a season or two. The expansion and contraction of Houston clay, combined with loose fill underneath, creates movement that tilts posts, gaps panels, and drags gates out of alignment. By year three, the fence looks like it's been through a storm that never happened.

We probe the soil at multiple points along the fence line, identify areas where fill depth varies, and adjust our post-setting technique accordingly. In some sections, posts go deeper than our standard 30-inch line depth — and terminal and gate posts are always set at 36 inches. In others, wider concrete footings distribute the load across unstable soil. The adjustments add labor hours, but they prevent the slow-motion failure that plagues fences built without soil assessment.
